SOUTHEAST MIDDLE SCHOOL
APRIL 22, 2010 - HAPPY EARTH DAY!
1. Thanks to all of you who filled out the Teacher Working Conditions Survey. We had a 95% completion rate for our school and a 91% completion rate for WSFCS. This information makes a difference!
2. Again, please check the calendar updates regularly. We have had many additions and changes for these last two months of school. You can print out a daily, weekly, or monthy version of the schedule if that makes it easier for you to read or keep up with.
3. Meeting with Technology for website transfer: The Technology Department will be here on Monday, May 3, to assist you in transferring your current website over to the new system. This is not a training on the basics of the new system. The specific purpose is to make sure your website material gets transferred over to the new webpage without losing any of your current information. I know that SSC meetings are scheduled for that day, but for this one time we are going to cancel your SSC meeting on May 3 so that you can attend this training during your planning period. Better to get this completed now instead of having to schedule a time after EOG testing at the very end of the school year!
This is a required session. Those of you who do not teach but have a website must also attend one of the sessions to complete this process. Session schedule: 8th grade - 7:35, 7th grade - 9:45, Encore - 11:35, and 6th grade - 12:40. All sessions will be in Room 612. You can get credit for this workshop by registering online. The name of the session is "Schoolwires - Content Migration."
4. Sign-Ups for Music Performances: We have several music performances coming up in May. Starting Monday, there will be sign-up sheets for all certified staff to sign up for a duty. All certified staff must sign up for one night's performance. Please complete your sign-up by next Friday, April 30. Dates for performances:
Tuesday, May 4 (7th/8th Orchestra - 6:00 and 7:00pm at SEMS)
Thursday, May 6 (6th Orchestra/Chorus - 6:00 and 7:00pm at SEMS)
Monday, May 10 (6th Band - DOES NOT need coverage)
Tuesday, May 11 (7th/8th Chorus - 6:00pm at GLENN HS)
Thursday, May 13 (7th/8th Band at SEMS - 6:00 and 7:00pm)
5. I apologize for all of the confusion on the progress report dates for the fourth quarter. Just look at the students' ACC folders if you forget the dates. That schedule is correct: May 12 is for core and encore and June 2 is for core reports.
6. Make-up work for students: If you have a parent who requests work for their child who is out sick, please make sure that you get the work together within 24 hours or less so that the parent can pick it up in the office or you can work out a specific plan with the parent individually. We have run into multiple situations where a parent has requested work and no work is ever provided in the days that follow. We must provide this for the child if requested by the parent. In addition, once a student returns to school from an absence, they must be provided ample time to complete and turn in the work they missed (usually the case is 2 make-up days for every day of absence).
7. Sending students to the office: There has been much confusion regarding where to send students for issues that they need assistance with. If a student is injured, needs any type of medical attention, or needs to call home, they are to come to the MAIN OFFICE only. Please do not send them to the guidance office or to the gym. Please note that our school is limited on what first aid we can provide for the student. We are only allowed to provide band-aids, ice, and a few other items. We cannot give them any type of chemical, spray, cream, etc. That is strictly prohibited by WSFCS. If the student needs to see the nurse, she is available in the guidance office on Fridays. Students really should not need to leave the classroom for any other reason unless they are going to the restroom or have been called down by the office. The guidance office is available for students if they need to talk to a counselor, if they have a prearranged situation with medication, scheduling, or turning in required guidance forms. The guidance department does not provide any clothing items for students nor do they store any personal items for them. If you are unsure about where to send a student who needs assistance, please call the main office first to check.
8. Substitutes: There are some days when we do not have enough substitutes to cover staff absences. In those cases, we must pull current staff to fill the gaps to ensure the proper supervision of our students. Sometimes this does create a frustrating situation when we have to do that. We only do that when absolutely necessary. There are times when absences come up at the last minute or substitutes run late. Please know that it is Dr. Martin's expectation that schools make arrangements to cover everyone where necessary. Actually, there is a policy amendment coming up that will state that schools must cover absences even more than we're used to with our own staff because the sick leave policy is about to change. Susie Hook has been given the responsibility for taking care of our substitutes. Please know that she consults with an administrator before making changes to the substitutes under these conditions. I'm asking for your flexibility on these occasions. We are doing the best we can with what we have. And Susie is fulfilling that duty with the administrators' approval. If you have any issues or concerns with this process, please see an administrator.
9. Another week closer to EOGs! Thanks again for all of your continued hard work. Just remember that our work will pay off when these students succeed on their tests.
