Weekly Update 4-29-10

SOUTHEAST MIDDLE SCHOOL
APRIL 29, 2010

1.  Congratulations to the P.E. Department.  They just received a renewal on their Fuel Up to Play 60 grant worth $3,000!

2.  Congratulations to Bill Martin.  He recently presented at a science conference in Fort Fisher, NC.

3.  Congratulations to the SEMS girls soccer team.  They beat Kernersville this afternoon and will play in the conference final next week!

4.  Congratulations to Cy Fogleman, one of our outstanding students.  Today he was awarded with a Forsyth County Governor's Outstanding Youth Volunteer award.  If you see him, please congratulate him!

5.  Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week!  Thank you to all of our educators for making SEMS an awesome place to work and learn!  You will receive several goodies next week, so be on the lookout.  Breakfast will be provided on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings compliments of several different groups and individuals.  We will thank them next week as well.

6. Meeting with Technology for website transfer: The Technology Department will be here on Monday,
May 3, to assist you in transferring your current website over to the new system. This is not a training on the basics of the new system. The specific purpose is to make sure your website material gets transferred over to the new webpage without losing any of your current information. I know that SSC meetings are scheduled for that day, but for this one time we are going to cancel your SSC meeting on May 3 so that you can attend this training during your planning period. Better to get this completed now instead of having to schedule a time after EOG testing at the very end of the school year!

This is a required session. Those of you who do not teach but have a website must also attend one of the sessions to complete this process. Session schedule: 8th grade - 7:35, 7th grade - 9:45, Encore - 11:35, and 6th grade - 12:40. All sessions will be in Room 612. You can get credit for this workshop by registering online. The name of the session is "Schoolwires - Content Migration."

7.  Sign-Ups for Music Performances: We have several music performances coming up in May. Sign-up sheets were posted in the lounge on Monday.  All certified staff need to sign up for a duty.  Most of the concert slots are full, but several teachers still need to sign up for the remaining slots.  Please do this by Friday, April 30.

8.  Track team - FYI - Some of the track runners may be carrying a water bottle with them during the school day on Monday. This will be allowed on this one occasion.  Good luck to our track team next week. They will run in the WSFCS county meet at Mt. Tabor starting at 4:00pm on Monday afternoon.

9. Make-up work for students: If you have a parent who requests work for their child who is out sick, please make sure that you get the work together within 24 hours or less so that the parent can pick it up in the office or you can work out a specific plan with the parent individually. We have run into multiple situations where a parent has requested work and no work is ever provided in the days that follow. We must provide this for the child if requested by the parent. In addition, once a student returns to school from an absence, they must be provided ample time to complete and turn in the work they missed (usually the case is 2 make-up days for every day of absence).

10. Thanks to all groups for forwarding a copy of your SSC minutes.  This is so important for me to look at to determine what adjustments need to be made for next year.  SSC is a district priority, so our goal will be to make this requirement work for our school and group needs.

11. If you have any information that needs to be forwarded to the staff from outside groups (outside WSFCS), please have that information approved with me first.  There are lots of organizations that are looking for publicity, but they must receive approval from WSFCS (Example:  Most of the flyers that go in our ACC folders throughout the year arrive at our school with a WSFCS prior approval sheet).  So if there is any information/service that you would like to be distributed to the staff (i.e. put in mailboxes, email, etc.) please ask first.

12.  For those of you who have put in for a transfer:  The Teacher Transfer Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, May 5, from 4:30 - 6:00pm at Parkland High School.

13.  On Monday, May 24, we will have the dedication ceremony of the newly landscaped hill at 2:30pm.  The hill is being dedicated to Debbie Warren in honor of her service to SEMS and WSFCS.  All staff are expected to attend.  The ceremony will not be long.  Some WSFCS central office staff, Lowe's staff, PTSA, and Kernersville News will be present.

14.  Important events to mention:
      Monday - Staff meeting
Thursday - Grade level EOG training w/Deb Neal
Monday, May 17 - Staff meeting

      Keep checking your online calendar!
