SOUTHEAST MIDDLE SCHOOL
THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 2012
1. We will resume the second round of tutoring during the week of January 24. Deb Neal will get your new tutoring lists to all teachers. For the third quarter, we will do tutoring during 2nd, 4th, and 6th periods.
2. GRADES DUE: Grades for the second quarter will be due by Tuesday, January 24, by 4:00pm. Please turn in your verification sheets to Sandy Derrah by this time. Please remember that the calendar laws changed and the county no longer must have a teacher workday at the end of each quarter to enter grades. On Monday, January 23, all teachers will have Common Core/Essential Standards training since it is an Rc day. Report cards must go out to students on February 1.
3. We have received the individual teacher EVAAS reports from last year's testing. I will share these with you over the next few weeks. I will schedule some time to visit your SSC meetings to share - I will contact each SSC group.
4. We are still planning to move forward with our new paper progress report plan starting the second semester. I will forward an information sheet to each of you so that you know the expectations. Please remember that the School Board policy indicates that your grades be updated weekly in NCWISE and parents watch this very closely. So be sure to update your grades according to this. During the second semester, paper progress reports will go out on February 29 and May 16.
5. Students received a flyer last week about a blood drive at Caleb's Creek in February. If any students turn these in to you, please turn them in to the office. We will collect forms in the main office and take to CCES.
6. The 8th grade will take their required field trips to the Career Center in April. The dates are now on the online calendar. We must be creative in our structure for these trips since we no longer have teams. We are now working on the details of the schedule, lunches, etc. Allison Barnes will be forwarding you the information as we get closer to those dates.
7. We have now scheduled our school fundraiser. We have worked hard to simplify this process to provide minimal disruptions to the classrooms. It is a very simple fundraiser and we have the potential to make a lot of money to help cover EOG prep material resources, general school supplies, and technology improvements. We will share the information with you at the February 13 staff meeting. We will have our fundraiser kickoff assemblies on Friday, February 17 (similar structure as in the past through encore classes), and then the fundraiser will conclude on Friday, March 2. The primary incentive for this fundraiser will be a slam dunk show. The show will take place on Monday, March 19, at about 12:30. More details coming soon...
8. The Winston-Salem Foundation is offering Booke grants to educators. The purpose of these grants are to provide professional development funding to a teacher wishing to further their expertise in their field. This is open to any educator, not just teachers. To apply, please visit their website at wsfoundation.org and click on the grant seekers tab. If you plan to apply, you must let me know in writing so that we get the proper permissions for you to apply. This is a wonderful opportunity, so please take advantage!
9. The Straight A lunch will take place on Wednesday, February 8.
10. The PTSA will have their Valentines' Day chocolate sale on Feb. 9, 10, 13, and 14 during lunches. They will be selling chocolate bars for students to purchase and give to someone. They simply purchase, fill out the sticker on the chocolate bar, and give to whomever they choose. We decided to limit this to the lunch periods so that you would have minimal disruption in your classrooms.
11. Winter weather is still a possibility over the next few months. Please remember that if we are out of school due to weather conditions, then that A/B day will be skipped over and we will stay on the schedule of the county's A/B rotation (Example: Monday is an A day, Tuesday is B, Wednesday is A. School gets called off on Tuesday. Wednesday will still remain an A day - the schedule will not change.).
12. Several individuals recently have asked about whether or not staff are allowed to wear hats to school with their outfits. Up until now, I had not addressed this at all in regards to the staff dress code. So, the decision on this issue is that staff are not allowed to wear hats during the school day. This would send the wrong message to the students, as they are not allowed to wear them either. The exact same reasoning would apply to staff. If you have any questions, please let me know.
13. The School Improvement Team met on Tuesday of this week. Several issues were discussed. Actions as a result of the meeting include: 1) I will send out details to all staff members regarding paper progress reports and communicating with students and parents, 2) I will contact SSC facilitators to review several items within their groups, 3) Hallway procedures and several other student items will be addressed in two ways - I will give out information to all teachers to review with students early in the third quarter and a letter will be sent home to parents asking for their support in reviewing expectations with their children as well, 4) CHAMPs and basic Single School Culture norms need to be reviewed as a staff. With many new staff members over the past 4-5 years, there is a need for all staff to be educated and on the same page when it comes to this. We will cover more information on this at our next staff meeting.
14. The Vertical Planning Meetings originally scheduled for Monday, January 30 have been postponed. We will have a staff meeting instead on this day.
15. Please visit the online calendar sometime in the next few days. More dates have been added to the calendar. We still have several events to add as they get scheduled.
Happy Birthday!
