Weekly Update 1/27/11

SOUTHEAST MIDDLE SCHOOL
THURSDAY, JANUARY 27

1.  Deb Neal had knee surgery yesterday.  She will be out for about 2 weeks.  We wish her a speedy recovery!

2.  Dara Hedgecock has now been out of work for almost two weeks.  Bronchitis, etc. has gotten her down!  She's been to the doctor three times now.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

3.  Congratulations to the following students.  They receive Gold or Silver Key Awards for their artwork:  Gold - Bri Hinson, Danielle Schultz (2 Gold Keys); Silver -  Heather Hoback, Keauna Samuels, and Kenhoor Saur (3 Silver Keys).  Thanks to Mrs. Albertelli and Mrs. Ring for all of their hard work as well!

Some of Albertelli's and Ring's artwork will be displayed at the new credit union that is getting ready to open up on Route 66.  Check it out!

4.  Now that you have your Blue Diamond data, please plan on analyzing that data in your SSC meetings in the next few weeks.  Remember that the scores serve as a roadmap for your students and instruction, not as an evaluative tool on you as the teacher.

5.  Aryel Cloaninger and Brianna Smith will be our Administrators for a Day on February 3.  They received this incentive since they were the two highest fundraisers from November.  They will observe classrooms, supervise, eat lunch in my office, etc.  The administrators will be taking their places throughout the day in some of their classes, so don't be surprised to see one of us sitting there!  If you teach one of these individuals, please know that they will not be present in class on this day.

6.  New tutoring groups lists are due this coming Monday.  We will start the new groups next week.  Since Deb Neal is out, Jeff Nichols will oversee that the lists are submitted.  If you are keeping the same group as you did in January, you must still submit your list.  The online form under Teacher Resources for the tutoring is working, so you must submit your list online by Monday at 3:00pm.  The instructions for submitting your list on the webpage are below.  You must submit by the deadline so that encore teachers can view the list.

Instructions:
    1. Go to SEast Website.
    2. Sign In immediately
    3. Click on Teacher Resources link (left hand side of the screen)
    4. Click on Tutoring List Form
    5. Input information and click DONE.

7. As of now, the following dates are the make-up student days for the snow days: February 21, April 25, June 10, June 13, and June 14.

8. Homebase teachers, please remember that your daily student attendance is due by 9:00am each morning.

9. The PTSA Fundraiser will begin on February 4. Some information went home with students in their Wednesday folders yesterday. They will be selling chocolate again this year. The kickoff assemblies will take place on February 4.  The assemblies will be in the gym at the following times:  8th grade at 8:15, 7th grade at 10:00, and 6th and 12:45.  All students will return to homebase at 1:40pm to receive their boxes of chocolate (I sound like Forrest Gump) that they signed up for.  We will get out instructions this week for all teachers for the sale and the procedure for next Friday.

10.  We will offer the training for 21st Century Skills on Monday, Jan. 31.  It will be held in the Media Center at 2:15pm.  This is an optional training session.  If you plan to attend, please register online.  The title of the training is 21st Century Learning: Content and Skills.  The date on the online registration is wrong.  It will be listed as 2/7/11, but the training is actually on Jan. 31.  In this session, we will cover the details of 21st century skills on the teacher evaluation tool and we will share ideas of how these skills can be put in to action in the classroom.

11. The SEMS Spring Arts Festival is set for the evening of Tuesday, March 15. We will have the PTSA Spring Book Fair, music performances, art displays, visiting artists, arts and crafts fair, face painting, etc. We will soon have a meeting with anyone interested in organizing and even being a part in the festival.

12. It is time to update your rosters on your emergency clipboards. Please print a new copy of your rosters and post them on the clipboard by February 4.

13.  The rising 6th grade Open House will take place on Thursday, February 17, from 6:00 - 7:15pm. The snow date will be Monday, February 21.  All 6th grade and encore teachers are required to attend.  This will fulfill the evening event requirement for these teachers.

14.  The Kernersville Cup will take place on Tuesday, February 22, at East Forsyth High School against Kernersville Middle.  The 8th grade girls will play at 6pm followed by the boys at 7pm.  Come out and show your support!
