Weekly Update 2/3/11

SOUTHEAST MIDDLE SCHOOL
FEBRUARY 3, 2011

1.  Congratulations to Frankie Santoro.  He was just awarded a $700 Target grant for a field trip!

2.  Congratulations to David Brown.  He was honored recently for completing the state SRO training.  Very few officers in the state receive this!

3.  Congratulations to Susie Hook.  She was nominated by someone for the Classified Employee of the Year!

4.  Deb Neal should return early next week.  We wish her a speedy recovery with her knee surgery!

5.  Thanks to those of you who attended the 21st Century Learning workshop on Monday.  We had 25 participants.  I hope that all of you were able to get something out of that training.  If you attended, please be sure that you registered online.  You will soon receive confirmation of your registration and you must then complete the online evaluation in order to receive credit.

6.  The new State Employees Credit Union has just opened up on Route 66.  We are looking to form a partnership with them, especially since several of our parents work there.  They do have some opportunities for our students.  In addition, they are looking to form an advisory board.  Their board meets quarterly to talk about what services they offer and what the community would like for them to offer.  The meeting is followed by a dinner, compliments of the credit union.  What a great deal!  If you are interested in being on the board, please let me know.  I will forward you the contact information.

7.  The Winston-Salem Foundation is looking for candidates for this year's Sam and Anne Booke Grant.  Recipients can receive up to $1,500. This money is specifically for staff development for that individual.  Rachel Holmes received this award last year and can testify to this honor.  If you are interested in applying, which we highly recommend, then please go to the WS Foundation website to the grant section for the form.  The deadline to apply is March 4.

8.  If you are interested in forming a team or participating in this year's Race for the Cure, please let me know.  I have some information packets. This is a wonderful event for a great cause!

9. Now that you have your Blue Diamond data, please plan on analyzing that data in your SSC meetings in the next few weeks.  Remember that the scores serve as a roadmap for your students and instruction, not as an evaluative tool on you as the teacher.

10. As of now, the following dates are the make-up student days for the snow days: February 21, April 25, June 10, June 13, and June 14.

11. The PTSA Fundraiser will begin on February 4. Some information went home with students in their Wednesday folders last week. They will be selling chocolate again this year. The kickoff assemblies will take place on February 4. The assemblies will be in the gym at the following times: 8th grade at 8:15, 7th grade at 10:00, and 6th and 12:45. All students will return to homebase at 1:40pm to receive their boxes of chocolate (I sound like Forrest Gump) that they signed up for. Instructions were forwarded to all of you earlier this week.

12. The SEMS Spring Arts Festival is set for the evening of Tuesday, March 15. We will have the PTSA Spring Book Fair, music performances, art displays, visiting artists, arts and crafts fair, face painting, etc. We will soon have a meeting with anyone interested in organizing and even being a part in the festival.

13. The rising 6th grade Open House will take place on Thursday, February 17, from 6:00 - 7:15pm. The snow date will be Monday, February 21.  All 6th grade and encore teachers are required to attend.  This will fulfill the evening event requirement for these teachers.

14. The Kernersville Cup will take place on Tuesday, February 22, at East Forsyth High School against Kernersville Middle. The 8th grade girls will play at 6pm followed by the boys at 7pm. Come out and show your support!
